Fun with Friends
Having a Great Time at the Australian Open

Squash players like to enjoy themselves. We like to meet friends we have not seen for a while or to make new friends with a shared interest in our sport. We enjoy laughing, eating, drinking and talking together.

The Australian Open team knows how important the 'fun' part of the Championships is to its success. Here's what we've got planned.

Gala Dinner

On the Saturday night after the semi-finals have been played, a Gala Dinner will be held in the magnificent setting of the National Convention Centre. It will be be a memorable ocassion to make the Australian Open even better. A fine three course meal, prepared with skill and care in the Convention Centre kitchens will be served to the 250 guests. Live music  by leading Canberra band, Big Boss Groove will encourage everyone to get up and dance. About 50 of the touring players will be at the Dinner in 2011 and will be distributed across the tables to give you a chance to find out what it really takes to make it as a profesional. With large tables of ten, there will be plenty of opportunities to meet new friends and catch up with old. Dead Nick Bar

Throughout the Championships, all visitors will be able to take a break in the large food and drink service area in the upstairs Ballroom. A wide range of food and soft drinks will be available for purchase and there will be plenty of tables and lounges to sit, relax and enjoy the activities on the first floor. In the evening, the Dead Nick Bar will swing into operation. Squash-themed and built for fun, the 'Dead Nick' will be the social heart of the Open. Before, during and after play on the Centre Court, the Dead Nick will be the place to catch up with friends and discuss the day's play - or politics or religion...

For the Night Owls

There's no reason to stop if you are having fun. Even if the Dead Nick calls it a day, a nominated night club or bar will be nominted each day where the night owls hoping to make the most of the Austarlian Open can keep going. Canberra's best are all within walking distance of the National Convention Centre. In 2011, the Canberra Casino proved to be the social venue of choice, located between the National Convention Centre and the Crowne Plaza Hotel.

The Foyer

If you need a quiet place to just sit and read or catch up with your emails on your notebook, the Foyer will be your choice. Light food will be available with high quality coffee - life's too short for bad coffee.

Woden Club Bar

During qualifying and the Under 21 Championships, the always busy Woden Club Bar will be serving food and drink to players and visitors to the Woden Squash Centre. Hosted by Squash ACT, the bar will stay open until even the diehards have had enough.

Tours of Canberra and Key Attractions

If there is enough interest from interstate and overseas visitors or their partners, we will arrange an Australian Open bus tour of the major places of interest around Canberra. Have a great time at some outstanding tourist spots - the War Memorial, National Museum, National Gallery and Telstra Tower - and share this with old and new squash friends.
